Prices and unit labor costs: a new test of price stickiness ¬リニ
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper investigates the predictions of a simple optimizing model of nominal price rigidity for the dynamics of inflation. Taking as given the paths of nominal labor compensation and labor productivity to approximate the evolution of marginal costs, I determine the path of prices predicted by the solution of the firms’ optimal pricing problem. Model parameters are chosen to maximize the fit with the data. I find evidence of a significant degree of price stickiness and substantial support for the forward-looking model of price setting. The results are robust to the use of alternative forecasting models for the path of unit labor costs, alternative measures of marginal costs, and alternative specifications of the model of price staggering. r 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. The Effect of Managers Expectations Stickiness on Relationship between Sustainability of Profitability Anomalies and Stock Price Synchronicity
Objective: Market anomalieschange with economic conditions, stock markets, selected samples, time periods and differences between industries. Revision of past forecasts leads to forecast error. The revisions result from new information. On the other hand, some managers slowly revise their forecasts in responding to new information. Therefore, the purpose of this research is to investigate the r...
متن کاملModelling the Heterogeneous Price Setting Behavior of Firms (DSGE Approach)
Despite the empirical evidence of the difference in the degree of price stickiness of goods and services, in the new standard Keynesian models, the same price stickiness is considered for all firms producing intermediate goods. In recent years, a new generation of pricing models has been introduced to simulate the heterogeneous price setting behavior in which, unlike standard pricing models, th...
متن کاملWhy are Gasoline Prices Sticky? A Test of Alternative Models of Price Adjustment
Several macroeconomic models of business cycles rely on the assumption that rms adjust prices infrequently to generate the short-run non-neutrality of money documented by the literature on monetary transmission. These models posit di¤erent mechanisms to generate price stickiness, with correspondingly di¤erent implications for ination dynamics. While empirical implications regarding the respon...
متن کاملProperties of Asset Prices and Costs of Sticky Prices
Operating leverage, the fraction of fixed costs of production in total costs, has recently attracted considerable attention in the asset pricing literature. Indeed, the theoretical asset pricing literature often relies on some form of operating leverage to rationalize the value premium, the fact that firms with currently low valuations compared to assets in place have higher subsequent returns ...
متن کاملOptimal Central Bank Disclosure in a Business Cycle Model
I study the social value of information in a New Keynesian model of monopolistic pricesetting with dispersed information, where the central bank can choose what information to share with the public. Under flexible prices, more disclosure is welfare improving: it reduces price dispersion and moves the economy closer to the first-best allocation. Under Calvo [1983] price stickiness, however, disc...
